    The GBS Group, an engineering services and consulting firm, is seeking a Marine Pipefitter to support our growing technology business in Virginia Beach, VA. The GBS Group designs and delivers high technology services and solutions to most advanced naval and maritime ships, as well as to special purpose platforms and assets. Our Headquarters is located within 10 miles of the Virginia Beach resort area and downtown Norfolk’s Waterside District and includes a 24x7 Operational Support Center monitoring all client installations in North America as well as a world class lab with configurations of all client hardware and software systems.

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to

    • Lays out, installs, and maintains pipe system, pipe supports, and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, sprinkling and industrial production and processing systems, applying knowledge of system preparation, and following blueprints and technical drawings.  Assembles and installs a variety of metal and non-metal pipes, tubes, and fittings including iron, steel, copper and plastic.  Connects pipes using threaded, caulked, soldered, brazed, fused or cemented joints using common “tools of the trade.”
    • Selects type and size of pipe and related materials and equipment such as supports, hangers, and hydraulic cylinders according to specifications.  Cuts, bends, and threads pipe using saws, cutters, torch, bending tools, etc.  Secures pipes to structure with brackets, clamps, and hangers by mechanical means or welding.
    • Work with Government Service personnel and commercial personnel from different companies supporting shipboard fluid systems.
    • Inspects work site to determine presence of obstructions and to ascertain where penetrations are required for pipe installations.  Identifies any interferences, hindrances or obstacles that will need to be addressed prior to starting job (shipcheck).
    • Inspect and survey existing ships.
    • Read and interpret original design drawings, technical manuals, and equipment specifications for incorporation into new designs.
    • Work independently. (degree of supervision dependent upon category level applied for)
    • Identify and solve problems as related to ship systems design and equipment installation.
    • Installations and modifications aboard government and commercial ships.

    Qualifications

    Candidates must possess the following professional experience and qualifications:

    • Level I: 0-3 years’ experience and knowledge of ship board piping installations including steam, air conditioning, water and oil / hydraulic systems.  Some direct supervision would be required.
    • Level II: 3-7 years’ experience and knowledge of ship board piping installations.  Minimal direct supervision would be required.
    • Level III: 7-12 years’ experience and knowledge of ship board piping installations.  No direct supervision would be required.
    • Familiar with use of saws, threading machines, benders, welding machines and testing tools and devices
    • Commitment to safety and quality and be familiar with “tag out” safety protocols and lock out devices.
    • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance and passport.

     Desired characteristics:

    • Possess strong analytical skills, demonstrated problem-solving capability, and ability to generate well written engineering and technical reports.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with leadership and team members
    • Ability to travel 20%
    • Additional trade qualifications (like Welding, Rigging, etc) a plus
