    The GBS Group, an engineering services and consulting firm, is seeking a Graphic Designer to join our Virginia Beach headquarters office. Our world class engineering staff consist of USCG licensed maritime engineers, professional engineers, and former shipboard operators. Propulsion, generator and steering controls designs developed by The GBS Group are deployed throughout the world on the most advanced naval and commercial maritime ships. The GBS Group is a commercial and government engineering services firm with a variety of contract types. Our headquarters is located within 10 miles of the Virginia Beach resort area and downtown Norfolk’s Waterside District and includes a 24x7 Operational Support Center monitoring all client installations in North America as well as a world class lab with configurations of all client hardware and software systems.

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to

    • Research new trends in UI/UX and be able to stay current and competitive in the appropriate marketplaces and able to provide a rationale for every UX/UI recommendation

    • Work hand in hand with clients, business team, and developers to produce visually stunning graphics from technical requirements in digital and print formats, including but not limited to: application flow, charting and graphing, usability enhancements, awareness of accessibility concerns, animations, sounds, and auditory/visual/haptic cues

    • Create conceptual wireframes for presentation and prototypal purposes

    • Design and maintain style guides across a variety of mediums

    • Develop graphics and layouts for product illustrations, custom iconography, company logos, marketing posters, and websites

    • Review existing software and documents and be able to provide usability and marketability improvements in a pragmatic and organized way

    • Maintain archive of images, photos, wireframes, presentations, and other work assets

    • Manage standard company headers across a variety of document types as well develop and continue to develop a corporate style guide

    • Prepare illustrations or rough sketches of material, discussing them with clients or supervisors and making necessary changes.

    • Mark up, paste, and assemble final layouts to prepare layouts for a variety of mediums for hand off to developers, business team members, and print shops


    Candidates must possess the following professional experience and qualifications:

    • Must have a BA or BFA in Graphic Design

    • At least 4 years of experience working with Adobe CC, Photoshop and Illustrator required

     Desired Characteristics:

    • At least 2 years of experience using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript/TypeScript preferred

    • Experience with mobile development preferred

    • Background in an Agile work environment preferred

    • Have a firm understanding of layout design and typography with respect to both digital and print media, and especially as design concepts relate to mobile development and responsive mobile first design

    • Experience with photoshoot art direction and post production retouching is a plus

    • Experience theming with Bootstrap or similar grid-based layout frameworks preferred

    • An eye for typography and layout and a creative approach to problem solving

    • Must be able to work in fast-paced environment

    • Strong communication skills with excellent attention to design detail

    • Ability to work on multiple projects at one time
