  • Overview

    The GBS Group, an engineering services and consulting firm, is seeking an Engineering Technician III to support our growing technology business in Virginia Beach, VA. The GBS Group is a commercial and government engineering services contractor with a variety of contract types. Our Headquarters is located within 12 miles of the Virginia Beach resort area and downtown Norfolk’s Waterside District and includes a 24x7 Operational Support Center monitoring all client installations in North America as well as a world class lab with configurations of all client hardware and software systems.

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to


    • Troubleshoot and repair programmable logic controllers (PLC), remote I/O and associated electrical components in support of shipboard control systems.

    • Install and configure configuration data sets in support of shipboard machinery control systems.

    • Read and interpret engineering drawings in support of troubleshooting, wiring, and testing.

    • Coordinate and conduct test of shipboard control systems.

    • Provide system operators training and support to equipment on installed shipboard control systems.

    • Identify and solve problems related to ship systems design and equipment installations and develop field modification request/ship alteration request as required.

    • Prepare technical documentation such as reports, procedures and test plans in support of all aspects of shipboard control systems.

    Qualifications

    Candidates must possess the following professional experience and qualifications:


    General Requirements:



    • Must have recent and current experience within two (2) years unless designated below.

    • Machinery Control System Suite: A minimum of three (3) years of experience in the operation, troubleshooting, repair, maintenance and assessment of MCS / ECS / MCSS and Support Systems, with at least 6 months’ experience occurring within the last 12 months.


    Desired Characteristics:



    • Demonstrate a working knowledge of Navy assessment programs, visit processes and reporting methods for visits.

    • Demonstrate regularly using accepted current instrumentation for diagnosing equipment.

    • Demonstrate ability for interpreting wiring diagrams and control schematics.

    • Current working knowledge of LPD‐17 Class Engineering Control System (ECS), to include data communication systems, VME based Remote Terminal Units (VRTUs), ECS Consoles, MPDE (Main Propulsion Diesel Engine) Controllers, Pitch indicating and Torsionmeter  systems.

    • Current working knowledge of “Smartship” Machinery Control System (MCS) / Machinery Control System Suite (MCSS), LSD and /or CVN Class PLCs, HMI consoles and peripherals, Networks (AECS), PLMU, Pitch indicating and Torsionmeter systems.

    • Current working knowledge of CG, DDG, McNab / Wireless Data Torsionmeter systems

    • Current working knowledge of LHD/LPD/LSD Class Damage Control Consoles and peripherals.

    • Technical SME support for INSURV / TSRA inspections/assessments, engine balancing and Sea Trials.

    • Ability to troubleshoot propulsion and auxiliary hardware, such as transducers, Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTE), Thermocouples, Signal Conditioners, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Input / Output Controllers (OICs), Network Switches and PC‐based control and monitoring systems.

    • Ability to utilize computers including the Microsoft Office Suite for compiling information for reports and history files and transfer digital pictures from camera to computer and enhance as required and label them for report purposes. 

    • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
