The GBS Group, an engineering and technical consulting firm, is seeking a PLC (Programmable Logic Control) Developer/ Engineer at our Philadelphia, PA office.  The GBS Group designs and delivers high technology services and solutions to most advanced naval and maritime ships, as well as to special purpose platforms and assets. Our office is located at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, which is a dynamic urban development, offering the Philadelphia region a unique and centrally-located waterfront business campus committed to smart energy innovation and sustainability. The Navy Yard has over 20 acres of parks, one mile of waterfront trail and is located less than one-half mile from the Wells Fargo CenterLincoln Financial FieldCitizens Bank Park, as well as the retail/entertainment center Xfinity Live!.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to

  • Read / write / debug ladder logic software applications.
  • Understand and debug system controller interfaces such as Modbus and Profibus protocols.
  • Configuration management tracking of shipboard platforms.
  • Maintain and track software library.
  • Assist in troubleshooting PLC systems.
  • Maintain feedback of issues found with users of the framework.
  • Make recommendations for improvements or modifications to correct problems.
  • Participate in coding peer reviews when required.


Candidates for this position must possess the following professional experience and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university or equivalent field degree.
  • 3 - 5 years’ experience as a controls engineer with PLC experience in an electrical and computer-related systems environment.
  • Knowledge of Rockwell and Siemens PLCs.
  • Understand ladder logic and structure text.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a secret clearance.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Proficient knowledge of the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures associated with industrial control systems.
  • Proficient knowledge of electrical power systems, power control systems and generator control systems.
  • Understand electrical schematics.
  • Ability to understand object-oriented programming methodologies, follow software design/development processes and lead software reviews.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective team leadership experience and excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to travel 20%.
  • Active Secret Clearance preferred.
